Raf Simons

A direct reaction against the mainstream and status quo, the cultural movement, attitudes and behaviours of youths is directly indicative of Raf Simons’ menswear. He is keen to express a progressiveness in the use of highly detailed fabrics and softly fabricated pantsuiting and jackets. The density and lightness to his collections are outrightly tailored with a strive for perfection, highlighting his background in Industrial Design. He embarked into Fashion Design through an internship with Belgian designer Walter van Beirendonck. Since this time, he has continued to produce his main namesake menswear collection and additionally, his secondary line, ‘Raf by Raf Simons’. He was the 2003 award recipient of the Swiss Textiles Awards and previously the head professor of the Fashion Department at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He divides his time in Belgium and Milan where he is also the Artistic Director for Jil Sander since 2005.
